Egypt's Legacy: The Archetypes of Western Civilization 3000-30 BC
Routledge | 240 pages | 2003 | ISBN: 0415268761 | PDF | 8.8 mb

Egypt's Legacy reviews the splendor and majesty of the history of Ancient Egypt from 3000-30 BC. Drawing upon Jungian analytical psychology, it elucidates the allure of Ancient Egypt, and suggests why Egypt has been so important in the history of the West. Jung claimed that there exist certain psychological drives dormant in our shared unconscious--these he termed archetypes. Characteristic Egyptian institutions such as kingship, the nation-state and an omnipotent, isolated god were powerful and complex manifestations of archetypes. Michael Rice contends that these archetypes underlie most of the accepted norms of Western civilization. Through an inherited unconscious, subsequent civilizations are influenced in their attempts to give archetypes form.

Robert Hichens"The Spell Of Egypt"
PDF | ISBN not applicable | Year 1911 | 98 pages | English | 1.05 MB

In Egypt one ever seeks the dead in sunshine, black vaults in the land of the gold. But here in Abydos I was accompanied by whiteness. The general effect of Seti's mighty temple is that it is a white temple when seen in full sunshine and beneath a sky of blinding blue. In an arid place it stands, just beyond an Egyptian village that is a maze of dust... -from "Abydos" Leave it to a beloved novelist to bring to life the allure and mystery of Egypt. First published in 1908 under the title Egypt and Its Monuments, this is a beautifully poetic valentine to that desert land by Robert Hichens, one of the most popular fiction writers of the early 20th century. Romantic and transporting, this lovely book explores the "drowsily splendid" pyramids, the "terrible repose" of the Sphinx, the "silver eddies" of the Nile, the "immense aspect of patience" suggested by the Colossi of Memnon, the Tombs of the Kings, where a "king's silence bids you be silent," and more. Whether you've actually traveled down the Nile or have only dreamed about it, you will be swept away by Hichens' idyllic prose.

Land Transport in Roman Egypt: A Study of Economics and Administration in a Roman Province (Oxford Classical Monographs)
By Colin Adams
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN: 0199203970 | edition 2007 | PDF | 350 pages | 1,13 mb

The papyri of Egypt offer a rich and complex picture of this important Roman province and provide an unparalleled insight into how a Roman province actually worked. They also afford a valuable window into ancient economic behavior and everyday life. This study is the first systematic treatment of the role of land transport within the economic life of Roman Egypt, an everyday economic activity at the center of the economy not only of Egypt but of the Roman world. Colin Adams studies the economics of animal ownership, the role of transport in the commercial and agricultural economies of Egypt, and how the Roman state used provincial resources to meet its own transport demands. He reveals a complex relationship between private individual and state in their use of transport resources, a dynamic and rational economy, and the economic and administrative behavior imposed when an imperial power made demands upon a province.

Ian Shaw, Ancient Egypt: A Very Short Introduction
Oxford University Press | ISBN 0192854194 | 2004 | PDF | 2 MB | 209 pages

The ancient Egyptians are an enduring source of fascination - mummies and pyramids, curses and rituals have captured the imagination of generations. We all have a mental picture of ancient Egypt, but is it the right one? How much do we really know about this great civilization? In this absorbing introduction, Ian Shaw describes how our current ideas about Egypt are based not only on the thrilling discoveries made by early Egyptologists but also on fascinating new kinds of evidence produced by modern scientific and linguistic analyses. He also explores the changing influences on our responses to these finds, through such media as literature, cinema and contemporary art. Each chapter deals with a different aspect of ancient Egypt, from despotic pharaohs to dismembered bodies, and from hieroglyphs to animal-headed gods.

Sibylle Meyer, "Egypt - Temple of the Whole World: Studies in Honour of Jan Assmann" (Numen Book Series)
Brill (2003) | English & German | ISBN: 9004132406 | 454 pages | PDF | 3.36 MB

"The intellectual heritage of Ancient Egypt" – once wrote Jan Assmann – "can hardly be said to have become part of our cultural memory. It is a subject of fascination, not of understanding." This fascination began when ancient Greek travellers started visiting Egypt, and continues unto this day, more often than not as a scholarly search for the oldest roots of our cultural memory. Jan Assmann's superb academic achievement undoubtedly represents the single most significant contribution to the modern understanding of Ancient Egypt, reaching far beyond the boundaries of Egyptology proper. The essays in this volume, all written by his friends and disciples, reflect the tremendous impact of his oeuvre on the scholarly world, encompassing not only Egyptological and related themes, but also central aspects of Judaeo-Christian identity such as monotheism and the historical events surrounding the recently discovered Diaspora temple of Yahu on the island of Elephantine.

The Vegetation of Egypt (Plant and Vegetation)
468 pages | Springer; 2nd ed. edition (February 1, 2009) | English | ISBN: 1402087551 | PDF | 13 MB

Product Description

The position of Egypt – at the cross-roads between the Middle East and Africa – has attracted the attention of naturalists and explorers for many centuries. Yet while there are many studies relating to the ecology and biology of Egyptian vegetation, the first issue of Zahran and Willis’ Vegetation of Egypt (1992) represented the first attempt to draw this diverse information together. In this second edition, this invaluable **** is both updated and expanded to include additional topics such as the role of remote sensing in mapping Egypt’s vegetation, and the economic potential of major desert species.

Covering each of the four major eco-geographical regions of Egypt – the Western Desert, the Eastern Desert, the Sinai Peninsula, and the Nile Region – the book integrates a wealth of detail and represents an important landmark in the vegetation of arid and Mediterranean-type regions. As such, it will provide an essential reference to advanced students and researchers in plant science, ecology, biogeography, climatology, economic botany and remote sensing.

Egypt's Making examines the first 3000 years of Egyptian history, from 5000-2000 BC, down to the collapse of the old Kingdom. Evoking the magic and wonder of most ancient Egypt, Michael Rice explains the essentially African character of the historic Egyptian society, institutions and art. He augments his **** with many superb illustrations of the art and architecture of this fascinating and relatively little-known period of Egypt's history.

Ancient Perspectives on Egypt (Encounters with Ancient Egypt) By Roger Matthews
Publisher: UCL Press 2003 | 200 Pages | ISBN: 1844720020 | PDF | 27.8 MB

We have material evidence that proves that Egypt was in contact with other regions and polities from an early period, seemingly in the form of exchange and trade in commodities. But what did these foreigners make of the Egyptians? These twelve essays explore the complexities of answering this question at different points in Egypt's history. Whilst some take a largely archaeological or materialistic approach (largely those looking at the period before c.1500BC), others assess the attitudes and perspectives of non-Egyptians through literary sources, looking in particular at the Greeks, Macedonians and Romans.

Manetho: History of Egypt and Other Works
Publisher: Loeb Classical Library | ISBN: 0674993853 | edition 1940 | PDF | 288 pages | 24,65 mb

Manetho was an Egyptian of the 3rd century BCE. Born probably at Sebennytus in the Delta, he became a priest or high priest at Heliopolis. Apparently he and a Greek Timotheus did much to establish the cult of Serapis in Egypt. Eight works or parts of works were ascribed to him, all on history and religion and all apparently in Greek: Aegyptiaca, on the history of Egypt; The Sacred Book on Egyptian religion; An Epitome of Physical Doctrines; On Festivals; On Ancient Ritual and Religion; On the Making of Kyphi (an incense); The Criticisms of Herodotus; and the spurious Book of Sôthis. These survive only as quoted by other writers. This volume also contains the doubtful Kings of Thebes (in Egypt) and the Old Chronicle.

Kathryn A. Bard
Introduction to the Archaeology of Ancient Egypt
Blackwell Publishing | 2007 | ISBN: 1405111496 | 437 pages | PDF | 35 Mb

Kathryn Bard has authored the first history of ancient Egypt based primarily on archaeological data. She is well qualified to do this as a result of her major contributions as an archaeologist to understanding the development of the state in prehistoric Egypt and of Egyptian trading relations with sub-Saharan Africa, as well as her editing of the highly successful Encyclopedia of the Archaeology of Ancient Egypt.

John Anthony West, "Serpent in the Sky"
Quest Books | 1993-07-25 | ISBN: 0835606910 | 266 pages | PDF | 6,7 MB

This revised edition of West's revolutionary reinterpretation of the civilization of Egypt challenges all that has been accpeted as dogma concerning this ancient and enigmatic land. It features a new introduction linking Egyptian science with the perennial wisdom tradition and an appendix updating the author's work in redating the Sphinx.

This is John Anthony West's amazing book Serpent in the Sky - The High Wisdom of Ancient Egypt (1993) which is the revised edition of a modern classic (first published in 1979) challenging just about all that has been accepted as dogma about ancient Egypt and an update to his account of the advanced civilization of Ancient Egypt which hid its roots behind symbolic drawings and monuments completely misunderstood by most of the (materialistic) researchers.

Its primary concern is to popularize the otherwise inaccessible work of legendary egyptologist R.A. Schwaller de Lubicz, who spent a great deal of time making exhaustive measurements of the Temple of Luxor and subsequently incorporated his findings into a comprehensive reinterpretation of ancient Egypt known as Symbolism. A final chapter and a pair of appendices summarize West's investigation of an offhand comment of Schwaller de Lubicz that the Sphinx appears to be weathered by water, with the conclusion that such weathering necessitates a redating of the Sphinx's carving to at least 5000-7000 BCE and perhaps much further in the past. As tracts of alternative archaeology go, this is not an easy read, and so the casual reader should be forewarned. West shows rather nicely how literal translations of Old Kingdom pyramid ****s seem like complete gibberish, and most likely do not do justice to the people who wrote them. The symbolic translation appears much more believable and actually makes sense once it is put on a higher level of consciousness and thus understanding.

On the other hand, West is not reticent about engaging in rants against what he terms the "Church of Progress," meaning the belief in technological and scientific advancement as the measure of human accomplishment, and the depradations of modern society (which, he boldly asserts, is not a civilization) on the human soul. As he explains in this richly illustrated book the unity and purpose of ancient Egyptian culture was represented by the Serpent which symbollized choice: the lower or the higher path. The author brings to life the world of a people for whom higher truth was a living reality and ultimate goal. Serpent in the Sky is probably the best introduction to the advanced civilization of ancient Egypt as the reader is shown a true glimpse into the Egyptian consciousness by showing the symbolic triple-level workings of heiroglyphics. Not to be missed by anyone interested in true historical roots of ancient egyptian civilization and human civilization as a whole. 280 pages, many pictures. A must read for everyone.

Andrew Harker "Loyalty and Dissidence in Roman Egypt: The Case of the Acta Alexandrinorum"
Cambridge University Press | 2008-06-02 | ISBN: 0521887895 | 262 pages | PDF | 1 MB

The Acta Alexandrinorum are a fascinating collection of ****s, dealing with relations between the Alexandrians and the Roman emperors in the first century AD. This was a turbulent time in the life of the capital city of the new province of Egypt, not least because of tensions between the Greek and Jewish sections of the population. Dr Harker has written the first in-depth study of these ****s since their first edition half a century ago, and examines them in the con**** of other similar contemporary literary forms, both from Roman Egypt and the wider Roman Empire. This study of the Acta Alexandrinorum, which was genuinely popular in Roman Egypt, offers a more complex perspective on provincial mentalities towards imperial Rome than that offered in the mainstream elite literature. It will be of interest to classicists and ancient historians, but also to those interested in Jewish and New Testament studies.

Temples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs: A Popular History of Ancient Egypt
William Morrow | ISBN: 006125276X | November 6, 2007 | PDF | 5 Mb | 352 Pages

An eye-opening, edifying, and endlessly entertaining tour through an astonishing bygone world—the acclaimed classic history of ancient Egypt, now newly revised and updated

Writing as Elizabeth Peters, world-renowned Egyptologist Barbara Mertz is the author of the phenomenally popular New York Times bestselling mystery series featuring archaeologist Amelia Peabody. In Temples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs, Dr. Mertz explores the breathtaking reality behind her fiction by casting a dazzling light on a remarkable civilization that, even after thousands of years, still stirs the human imagination and inspires awe with its marvelous mysteries and amazing accomplishments.

A fascinating chronicle of an extraordinary epoch—from the first Stone Age settlements through the reign of Cleopatra and the Roman invasions—Temples, Tombs, and Hieroglyphs brings ancient Egypt to life as never before. Lavishly illustrated with pictures, maps, photographs, and charts, it offers tantalizing glimpses into Egyptian society and everyday life; amazing stories of the pharaohs and the rise and fall of great dynasties; religion and culture; folklore and fairy tales; stories of the explorers, scientists, and unmitigated scoundrels who sought to unravel or exploit the ageless mysteries; and breathtaking insights into the magnificent architectural wonders that rose up from the desert sands.

Revised and updated to include the results of the most recent historical research and archaeological finds, Dr. Mertz's book is unhampered by stuffy prose and dry academic formality. Instead, it is a vibrant, colorful, and fun excursion for anyone who's ever fantasized about exploring the Valley of the Kings, viewing up close the treasures of the temple of Queen Hatshepsut, or sailing down the Nile on Cleopatra's royal barge.

Peter A. Clayton, "Chronicle of the Pharaohs: The Reign-By-Reign Record of the Rulers and Dynasties of Ancient Egypt With 350 Illustrations 130 in Color"
Thames & Hudson | 1994 | ISBN: 0500050740 | 224 pages | PDF (scan) | 120 MB

Who was the first king on ancient Egypt and who was the last? Which Egyptian queens ruled in their own right? What do we really know about the 170 or more pharaohs whose names have come down to us?

Chronicle of the Pharaohs is the first book to depict chronologically and in narrative form all the rulers and dynasties of Egypt. From Narmer, who first united lands along the Nile, to Cleopatra 3,000 years later, the history of ancient Egypt is brought vividly to life through the exploits and personalities of her rulers.

Key features of the book include:
• biographical portraits of all the known pharaohs
• timelines throughout, with at-a-glance visual guides to the length of each reign and the overlapping of dynasties;
• datafiles for every pharaoh, listing key information such as royal titles and family relationships;
• cartouches (royal names in hieroglyphs) for each king and queen;
• genealogical tables, lists of main historical events, and special features of subjects that range from the six wives of Rameses the Great to the Exodus;
• Portraits of all the major rulers and specially commissioned cutaway diagrams of royal tombs and monuments.

Here is an essential reference on ancient Egypt that provides an extraordinary visual introduction to the diversity and richness of this fascinating civilization. Museum goers, tourists, students, and everyone interested in the world on ancient Egypt will quickly make the Chronicle their inseparable companion.

Ana Ruiz, The Spirit of Ancient Egypt
Algora Publishing | ISBN 1892941686 | 2001 | PDF | 1 MB | 281 pages

“ Man settled along the banks of the Nile River as long ago as 7000 BC; four millennia later, in this very region, he had learned to read, write, and develop and expand as a community. Over the next 3000 years, Egypt prospered despite hardships, internal conflicts and foreign invasion. Herodotus, the Greek historian who traveled to Egypt in the 5th century BC, called it “the gift of the Nile.”

James Henry Breasted “Ancient Records of Egypt: The First Through the Seventeenth Dynasties, Vol. 1"
University of Illinois Press | 2001-05-17 | ISBN: 0252069900 | PDF | 400 pages | 11,4 Mb

Around the turn of the last century, James Breasted took on the challenge of assembling all the available historical ********s of ancient Egypt and translating them into English. This prodigious undertaking involved traveling to the monuments extant in the Nile valley and in outlying areas of Egyptian conquest, as well as to museums throughout Europe where Egyptian relics were housed. Breasted made his own copies of hundreds of Egyptian records inscribed on papyrus or leather or carved in stone and engaged in a thorough study of the published records of Egyptian history in conjunction with his own transcription of the ********s themselves. This five-volume compendium is the result.

Breasted's monumental work, originally published from 1906 to 1907, encompasses twenty-six dynasties spanning more than three millennia: from ca. 3050 B.C. to 525 B.C. For each ********, Breasted provides information on the location, condition, historical significance, and content. Beginning with the earliest known official annals of Egypt, the Palermo Stone, Breasted catalogs the realm's official activities, including royal succession, temple construction, property distribution, and foreign conquest. He tracks the careers of scores of kings, queens, government officials, military leaders, powerful statesmen, and influential courtiers, reproducing their autobiographies, letters of favor, paeans, mortuary gifts, and tomb inscriptions. Clearly annotated for the lay reader, the ********s provide copious evidence of trade relations, construction activities, diplomatic envoys, foreign expeditions, and other aspects of a vigorous, highly organized and centrally controlled society.
Breasted's commentary is both rigorously ********ed and accessible, suffused with a contagious fascination for the events, the personalities, the cultural practices, and the sophistication these records indicate. A herculean assemblage of primary ********s, many of which have deteriorated to illegibility in the intervening century, Ancient Records of Egypt illuminates both the incredible complexity of Egyptian society and the almost insuperable difficulties of reconstructing a lost civilization.
This first paperback edition of Ancient Records of Egypt features a new introduction and updated bibliography by Peter A. Piccione. Setting Breasted's work in the con**** of the development of American Egyptology, Piccione discusses Breasted's establishment of the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago, with corporate support by John D. Rockefeller and other benefactors, and surveys the ambitious body of publications with which Breasted laid the foundation for future Egyptian studies.

Ancient Egypt: The Light of the World By Gerald Massey
Cosimo Classics | 2007-03-01 | 680 Pages | ISBN: 160206086X | PDF | 4.2 Mb

With his earlier two series in Egyptology, Gerald Massey turned existing doctrine on its head to argue that not only had Egypt spawned human civilization, but that Egyptian mythology was the basis for Jewish and Christian beliefs. The culmination of his years at this particular intellectual pursuit, Ancient Egypt: The Light of the World is Massey's crown jewel. In this, the most philosophical (in both tone and concept) of his Egyptological works, Massey, ever the intrepid escort, leads a tour through thousands of years of sociological, cultural, and spiritual development, all the while pointing, with dazzling reason and persuasive prose, to a distant, common, Egyptian origin. British author GERALD MASSEY (1828-1907) published works of poetry, spiritualism, Shakespearean criticism, and theology, but his best-known works are in the realm of Egyptology, including A Book of the Beginnings and The Natural Genesis.

The treasury of ancient egypt: miscellaneous chapters on ancient egyptian history and archæology By Arthur E. P. B. Weigall
Publisher: Rand McNally&Co. 1912 | 173 Pages | ISBN: B0017K9Z0S | PDF (wiht illustrations and photographs) | 2 MB

This volume contains twelve chapters written at various times and in various places each dealing with some subject drawn from the great treasury of Ancient Egypt. Some of the chapters have appeared as articles in magazines. Sir Arthur Edward Pearse Brome Weigall (1880-1934) was an English Egyptologist, stage designer, journalist and author whose works span the whole range from histories of Ancient Egypt through historical biographies, guidebooks, popular novels, screenplays and lyrics. He started work as an apprentice clerk in the City of London, but a youthful fascination with genealogy led him to the pharaohs of Ancient Egypt and so into Egyptology. At Luxor, Weigall threw himself with immense energy into aspects of the job that in his view had been somewhat neglected-the protection and conservation of monuments that were steadily vanishing into the ravenous markets of Europe and North America.

Ancient Egypt in Africa (Encounters with Ancient Egypt) by David O'Connor
Publisher: UCL Press 2003 | 200 Pages | ISBN : 1844720004 | PDF | 12 MB

Although the study of Egyptian culture spurned its own discipline, Egypt is and always has been part of Africa. These twelve essays re-open the debate on the influence of Egyptian culture on the rest of Africa from early times to the Christian period acknowledging and discussing the distortions that have been created by 'racial prejudice, colonial and imperial interests'.

Soldier and Society in Roman Egypt: A Social History By Richard Alston
Publisher: Routledge 1995 | 263 Pages | ISBN: 0415122708 | PDF | 1.3 MB

The province of Egypt provides unique archaeological and ********ary evidence for the study of the Roman army. In this fascinating social history, Richard Alston examines the economic, cultural, social and legal aspects of the military career, illuminating the life and role of the individual soldier in the army.

Solider and Society in Roman Egypt provides a complete reassessment of the impact of the Roman army on local societies, and convincingly challenges the orthodox pciture. The soldiers are seen not as an isolated elite living in fear of the local populations, but as relatively well-integrated into local communities. The unsuspected scale of the army's involvment in these communities offers a new insight into both Roman rule in Egypt and Roman imperialism as well.

Reviews
A well written and illustrated description of egyptian history
This book reads well, in a subject area where turgid prose is the rule. It begins with topical sections giving a good overview, each of which can be read in an hour or two. Then it proceeds on a journey down the length of the Nile. Although I needed to read more specialized books, at the price of turgid prose, to delve deeply into some aspects of Egyptian prehistory, I regret that I had not started with this one. This book will do nicely as the ONLY or the FIRST book on Egypt in one's library, depending upon one's needs. Having read several books on Egypt previously ,which lacked good maps, the topical maps in this book justify the entire expense.

An intellectual and visual delight
This is the second edition of one of the finest summations of ancient Egyptian civilization ever written for the general reader. Not only is this an exellent introduction to many aspects of Egypt, it is a visual delight. The maps, especially, configure in the reader's mind spacial relationships and their cultural implications. Other illustrations of temple precincts and related architectural elements of Egyptian life supplement the excellent writing, written for, but never "down to" non-specialists. If I were to own only one reference work on ancient Egypt, this would be the one.

Michael Rice “Who's Who in Ancient Egypt"
Routledge | 1999-08 | ISBN: 0415154480 | 256 pages | PDF | 10,3 MB

This fascinating guide and sourcebook features over 900 biographical entries on the people of ancient Egypt. Who's Who in Ancient Egypt brings to life a wide and colorful variety of intriguing personalities: not only queens and kings such as Cleopatra, Nefertiti and Tutankhamun, but also Sebastet the royal hairdresser, Nakht the temple gardener, and even grave-robbers such as Amenwah--who was released for lack of evidence, but was proved guilty thousands of years later when archaeologists discovered the loot in his tomb. The entries are supplemented by extensive background material, including a chapter on "Encountering the Ancient Egyptians", sections on kingship and religion, a chronology, a glossary and maps. Any reader with an interest in ancient Egypt will want this absorbing volume.

The City in Roman and Byzantine Egypt
Publisher: Routledge | ISBN: 0415237017 | edition 2001 | PDF | 496 pages | 3 mb

The archaeological record of the Roman city in Egypt is poorer than that of many other provinces. Conversely, the large number of surviving ****s allows us to reconstruct the social lives of Egyptians to an extent impossible elsewhere. We are not, therefore, limited to a history of the public faces of cities, their inscriptions and the writings of their elites, but can begin to understand what the transformations of the city meant for ordinary people, and to uncover the forces that shaped the everyday lives of city dwellers. After Egypt became part of the Roman Empire in 30 BC, Classical and Christian influences both made their mark on the urban environment. This book examines the impact of these new cultures at every level of Egyptian society resulting in a new and fascinating insight into the creation of a specific urban society in the Roman Empire.

The Experience of Ancient Egypt by Dr A Rosa David
Publisher: Routledge 2000 | 216 Pages | ISBN: 0415032636 | PDF | 45.2 MB

In this intriguing survey, Rosalie David shows how the attitudes, opinions and working practices of Egyptologists have shaped the structure of their endlessly fascinating subject. The Experience of Ancient Egypt provides an engaging portrait of what we know about ancient Egypt today, examining issues of religion, beliefs and practices surrounding death, everyday life, and literature. David then looks at the history of Egyptology itself--tracing the discipline from its classical roots, through the deciphering of hieroglyphs in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, to the most up-to-date biomedical and archaeological techniques.

This book provides a comprehensive portrait of what we know about ancient Egypt today, examining in detail issues of religion, of beliefs and practices surrounding death, of everyday life and of literature.

The Beautiful Burial in Roman Egypt: Art, Identity, and Funerary Religion (Oxford Studies in Ancient Culture & Representation) By Christina Riggs
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA 2006 | 358 Pages | ISBN: 019927665X | PDF | 18 MB

This important new study looks at the intersection of Greek and Egyptian art forms in the funerary sphere of Roman Egypt. A discussion of artistic change, cultural identity, and religious belief foregrounds the detailed analysis of more than 150 objects and tombs, many of which are presented here for the first time. In addition to the information it provides about individual works of art, supported by catalogue entries, the study explores fundamental questions such as how artists combine the iconographies and representational forms of different visual traditions, and why two distinct visual traditions were employed in Roman Egypt.

Soldier of the Pharaoh: Middle Kingdom Egypt 2055-1650 BC (Warrior 121) By Nic Fields
Publisher: Os Publishing 2007 | 64 Pages | ISBN: 1846031060 | PDF | 25 MB

The Pharaohs of Egypt have captured the imagination of readers throughout the ages. Their existence and power have almost taken on a mythical status. In this book, Nic Fields reveals the truth behind these myths and explores the lives of the ordinary soldiers who were the might of Middle Kingdom Egypt. Using rare artifacts he pieces together the day-to-day existence of the Pharaoh's army from archers, to hand-to-hand fighters, through to the "sole-companions" of the Pharaoh.

Raffaella Cribiore, "Gymnastics of the Mind: Greek Education in Hellenistic and Roman Egypt"
Princeton University Press | 2005 | ISBN: 0691122520, 0691002649 | 288 pages | PDF | 8,1 MB

This book is at once a thorough study of the educational system for the Greeks of Hellenistic and Roman Egypt, and a window to the vast panorama of educational practices in the Greco-Roman world. It describes how people learned, taught, and practiced literate skills, how schools functioned, and what the curriculum comprised. Raffaella Cribiore draws on over 400 papyri, ostraca (sherds of pottery or slices of limestone), and tablets that feature everything from exercises involving letters of the alphabet through rhetorical compositions that represented the work of advanced students. The exceptional wealth of surviving source material renders Egypt an ideal space of reference. The book makes excursions beyond Egypt as well, particularly in the Greek East, by examining the letters of the Antiochene Libanius that are concerned with education.

The first part explores the conditions for teaching and learning, and the roles of teachers, parents, and students in education; the second vividly describes the progression from elementary to advanced education. Cribiore examines not only school exercises but also books and commentaries employed in education--an uncharted area of research. This allows the most comprehensive evaluation thus far of the three main stages of a liberal education, from the elementary teacher to the grammarian to the rhetorician. Also addressed, in unprecedented detail, are female education and the role of families in education. Symbol and the Symbolic: Ancient Egypt, Science, and the Evolution of Consciousness
Inner Traditions | ISBN 089281022X | 1978 Edition | PDF | 50 Pages | 1.9 MB

Symbolism is the intuitive means of overcoming the limitations of reason. Here Schwaller explains how true progress in human thought can be made only if we call upon the "symbolizing" faculty of intelligence, developed and refined in the temple culture of ancient Egypt and reflected in its hieroglyphs.

Toby Wilkinson "Early Dynastic Egypt"
Routledge | 1999-05-14 | ISBN: 0415186331 | 413 pages | PDF | 4,8 MB

Early Dynastic Egypt spans the five centuries preceding the construction of the Great Pyramid at Giza. This was the formative period of ancient Egyptian civilization, and it witnessed the creation of a distinctive culture that was to endure for 3,000 years. This book examines the background to that great achievement, the mechanisms by which it was accomplished, and the character of life in the Nile valley during the first 500 years of Pharaonic rule. The results of over thirty years of international scholarship and excavation are presented in this single volume. It traces the re-discovery of Early Dynastic Egypt, explains how the dynasties established themselves in government and concludes by examining the impact of the early state on individual communities and regions. This new paperback edition is the most comprehensive treatment of this period to date and breaks new ground by tackling hitherto neglected topics such as Early Dynastic administration and religion.

Amulets of Ancient Egypt By Carol Andrews
Publisher: University of Texas Press 1994 | 128 Pages | ISBN: 029270464X | PDF | 12 MB

Amulets are ornaments believed to endow the wearer by magical means with the properties they represent. They were first made in Egypt as early as 4000 BC and were essential adornments for both the living and the dead. Crafted from gold and silver, semiprecious stones, and less valuable materials, they are fine examples of Egyptian art as well as a vital source of evidence for religious beliefs. In this book, Carol Andrews offers the first comprehensive account of the types of amulets made, their symbolism, and their protective powers. An amuletic foot could be worn to ensure fleetness of foot, a hand for dexterity. The desert-dwelling hare symbolized keenness of the senses, and the hedgehog, which hibernated and survived outside the fertile valley, held connotations of rebirth and triumph over death itself. The ubiquitous amulet in the shape of the dung beetle, known as a scarab, was symbolic of new life. Amulets in the image of powerful gods would be worn for protection, and malevolent creatures, like the male hippopotamus, would be worn to ward off the evil they represented. Both a reference book and an informative account of Egyptian magical belief, this is the most complete survey of the subject to date.

Encyclopedia of Ancient Egypt
Publisher: Facts on File | ISBN: 0816045631 | edition 2002 | PDF | 462 pages | 5,23 mb

“ Writing this encyclopedia and then revising and expanding the scope of this work has been a genuine pleasure and privilege. The ancient Egyptians have fascinated centuries of human beings who have glimpsed or visited their splendid ruins along the Nile. The words of these ancients ring with a profound knowledge concerning human aspirations and ideals. Such wisdom kept the Egyptians vital and prospering for 3,000 years and bequeathed remarkable concepts to the generations to follow them. The history of Egypt provides an overall view of the nation in good times and in bad. The entries on religion, social development, temples, the military, and art, among others, give details about specific eras and accomplishments, but the haunting beauty of the Egyptians themselves can be found especially in the biographical entries on royal and common individuals who spent their lives serving the land and the spiritual heritage of the Nile Valley. These individuals lived and died, laughed and cried thousands of years ago, but they would prosper if transplanted into the modern world. They possessed a profound sense of cooperation in labors, of appreciation for the beauty of their homeland, and a unique awareness of the “other,” the presence of the spiritual aspects of human existence on the Nile. The hours spent researching the ancient Egyptians have expanded my own horizons, and I am grateful for the experience. ”

Giovanni Roberto Ruffini, "Social Networks in Byzantine Egypt".
Publisher: Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521895375 | 2008 edition | PDF | 288 Pages | 1.74 MB

Social network analysis maps relationships and transactions between people and groups. This is the first book-length application of this method to the ancient world, using the abundant ********ary evidence from sixth-century Oxyrhynchos and Aphrodito in Egypt. Professor Ruffini combines a prosopographical survey of both sites with computer analyses of the topographical and social networks in their papyri. He thereby uncovers hierarchical social structures in Oxyrhynchos not present in Aphrodito, and is able for the first time to trace the formation of the famous Apion estate. He can also use quantitative techniques to locate the central players in the Aphrodito social landscape, allowing us to see past the family of Dioskoros to discover the importance of otherwise unknown figures. He argues that the apparent social differences between Oxyrhynchos and Aphrodito in fact represent different levels of geographic scale, both present within the same social model.

Publisher: Osprey Publishing | 2003 | ISBN 1855322080 | PDF | 64 pages | 13.5 MB

Builders of the Pyramids and most ancient of all the powers of the biblical world, the Egyptians remain one of history's most fascinating and enigmatic peoples. During the New Kingdom era, Egypt reached the peak of its power, wealth, and territory. Through the intensive military campaigns of Pharaoh Thutmose III (1490-1436BC), Palestine, Syria, and the northern Euphrates area in Mesopotamia were all brought within the New Kingdom. Mark Healy outlines the history, organisation and dress of the New Kingdom Egyptians in this volume packed with accompanying illustrations and photographs, including 12 full page colour plates by the ever popular Angus McBride.

Bob Brier, Jean-Pierre Houdin - The Secret of the Great Pyramid: How One Man's Obsession Led to the Solution of Ancient Egypt's Greatest Mystery
HarperCollins | 2008 | ISBN: 006165552X | Pages: 304 | PDF | 14.70 MB

Nine years ago, French architect Jean-Pierre Houdin became obsessed by the centuries-old mystery of how the Great Pyramid was built. For ten hours a day, he labored at his computer to create exquisitely detailed 3-D models of the interior of the Great Pyramid. After five years of effort, the images rotating on his computer screen provided evidence of an astonishing secret. Corkscrewing up the inside of the Great Pyramid is a mile-long ramp, unseen for 4,500 years. The pyramid was built from the inside. This revelation casts a fresh light on the minds that conceived one of the wonders of the ancient world.

The Secret of the Great Pyramid moves between the ancient and the modern. The ancient story chronicles, step-by-step, how a nation of farmers only recently emerged from the Stone Age could construct one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. To execute something as complex and massive as the Great Pyramid, Egypt needed architects, mathematicians, boat builders, stone masons, and metallurgists. It took twenty years to build the Great Pyramid. By the time its capstone was laid in 2560 B.C., the innovations born of the building quest had transformed agrarian Egypt into the world's most modern, most powerful nation.

As we follow the progress of Hemienu, the innovative architect who planned, organized, and oversaw construction of the Great Pyramid, we also follow Houdin working to discover how and why the ancient architect designed the Pyramid as he did. Houdin works as a forensic architect, aiming to reconstruct the lessons Hemienu had learned from construction of three previous pyramids and to visualize his blueprint for the massive stone building. In the process, Houdin also discovers the answers to other questions that have bedeviled Egyptologists for centuries: such as what was the purpose of the mysterious Grand Gallery and when did the Pyramid crack? Along the way, Houdin receives the support of a pathbreaking French software company, which helps him validate his theory virtually—a first in archaeology!

The story of genius and obsession in the ancient and modern world, this archaeological mystery will appeal to anyone who has ever been captivated by this magnificent edifice.

Anthony J. Spalinger " War in Ancient Egypt: The New Kingdom"
Wiley-Blackwell | 2005-02-07 | ISBN: 1405113715 | 312 pages | PDF | 3,7 MB

This book is an introduction to the Pharaonic war machine of New Kingdom Egypt from ca.1575–1100 bc. Written by a respected Egyptologist, it concentrates on Dynasty XVIII and the Ramesside period, in which the Egyptians created a professional army and gained control of Syria, creating an "Empire of Asia."
The author highlights technological developments during this period, such as the new use of chariots and siege technology, and considers the socio-political aspects of warfare, particularly the rise to power of a new group of men. At the same time, he evaluates the military effectiveness of the Egyptian state by looking at the logistics of warfare; each chapter is followed by an "excursus" in which the logistical issues are analyzed in detail.
The **** incorporates pictorial and archaeological materials, ensuring a fully rounded treatment of the subject. A chronological table listing dynasties and pharaohs also helps readers to gain an overview.

Morris L. Bierbrier, "Historical Dictionary of Ancient Egypt, 2nd Edition (Historical Dictionaries of Ancient Civilizations and Historical Eras)"
The Scarecrow Press, Inc. | 2008-09-28 | ISBN: 0810857944 | 488 pages | PDF | 2,4 MB

The "Historical Dictionary of Ancient Egypt" is a quick and accurate ready reference for both the Egyptologist and the non-specialist. It presents the important people and places in ancient Egyptian history as well as those in the history of Egyptology. Coverage is given to ancient Egyptian rulers, bureaucrats, and commoners whose records have survived, to ancient society, religion, and gods, and to the people and places significant to modern archaeological discoveries and scholarship. An important part of this work, not featured in other dictionaries, is a detailed bibliography of the historic periods, archaeological sites, and other important aspects of ancient Egyptian studies. The bibliography presents the most up-to-date monographs on these themes, many of which have appeared only in recent years and may not be known to the public at large.

Joyce A. Tyldesley, "Cleopatra: Last Queen of Egypt"
Profile Books(GB) | 2008-01 | ISBN: 1861979657 | 290 pages | PDF | 1,3 MB

The Romans regarded her as 'fatale monstrum', a female Saddam Hussein. Pascal said the shape of her nose changed the history of the world. Shakespeare and Tiepolo (and Elizabeth Taylor) portrayed her as an icon of tragic beauty. But who was Cleopatra, really? She was the last ruler of the Macedonian dynasty of Ptolemies who had ruled Egypt for three centuries. Highly educated (she was the only one of the Ptolemies to read and speak ancient Egyptian as well as the court Greek) and very clever (her famous liaisons with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony were as much to do with politics as the heart), she steered her kingdom through impossibly taxing internal problems and against greedy Roman imperialism. Stripping away our preconceptions, many of them as old as her Roman enemies, Joyce Tyldesley uses all her skills as an Egyptologist to give us a rich picture of a country and its Egyptian queen in this magnificent biography.

This updated and revised version of Dr. Mertz's stunning collection of everything related to the civilization of ancient Egypt is brought to life through Lorna Raver's informative and entertaining narration. Raver is solid and unwavering throughout, sounding as though she's enjoying the information she so clearly presents. She brings fun and excitement to a field that many consider to be overly analyzed and studied, offering a learning experience through an abundance of speculative fiction sure to capture the minds of even the youngest listeners.

Sarah B. Pomeroy, "Women in Hellenistic Egypt: From Alexander to Cleopatra"
Schocken books | 1984 | ISBN: 0805239111 | 241 pages | PDF | 25,7 MB

After its conquest in 331 B.C., Egypt became the center of the Hellenistic world, attracting men and women from other parts of the Mediterranian area. In this cosmopolitan and moblie society, Greek women of the ruling class had unprecedented opportunities and were able to employ some legal freedoms enjoyed by their Egyptian counterparts.
Using evidence from a wide variety of sources including literature, papyri, inscriptions, coins, and terra-cotta figurines, Sarah Pomeroy discusses women ranging from queens such as Arsinoe II and Cleopatra VII to Jewish slaves working on a Greek estate. This edition [1990] contains a new forward, additional information, and an updated bibliography by the author.
